Psychological Safety

What’s Psychological Safety?

  • In her book, The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth, Amy C. Edmondson broadly defines Psychological Safety as a climate in which people are comfortable expressing and being themselves. It is the belief that the work environment is safe for interpersonal risk taking and workers feel able to speak up with relevant ideas, questions or concerns.
    • Read: You can read a summary of the book (attached).
    • Think: Psychological Safety is a characteristic of a group, not an individual. Reflect on a team (work or other) in which you have experienced psychological safety, and one in which you haven’t. What leadership factors contributed to their respective states of psychological safety?
  • In his book “The Four Stages of Psychological Safety,” Timothy R. Clark defines Psychological safety to be a condition in which you feel (1) included, (2) safe to learn, (3) safe to contribute, and (4) safe to challenge the status quo—all without fear of being embarrassed, marginalized, or punished in some way.
  • Think: The four stages of psychological safety are: Inclusion Safety; Learner Safety; Contributor Safety; Challenger Safety. What leadership strategies have you observed from your supervisors or colleagues that have made you feel 1) welcome and accepted on the team, 2) encouraged to engage in learning, 3) invited to contribute ideas in discussions, and 4) free to offer alternative perspectives?
